Young People for a Life Without Tobacco : Action for Prevention

Area : Health and well-being

Country : Greece Location : Regions of Attiki, Axaia, Evros, Ioannina, Irakleio, Larisa and Τhessaloniki

Who implemented the activity :
The Hellenic Medical Students' International Committee (HelMSIC) is a non-governmental, non-political, non-profitable voluntary organization created by Greek medical students. It was founded in 1958 and counts more than 9000 members today. Its main purposes are the educational exchanges of medical students between universities from all over the world and the promotion of health issues through special events. HelMSIC is a member of EMSA (European Medical Students’A ssociation) and of IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations). HelMSIC’ s structure has allowed us to create a constantly increasing students’ network of trained medical students who are committed to this project. Moreover, HelMSIC has Local Offices in every greek city which has a Medical School. lTherefore each local office of HelMSIC, therefore each Medical School has its own group of trained medical students.

Aims / Objectives :
The aim of the project is to raise awareness on smoking hazards and discourage tobacco initiation and to promote a healthy lifestyle. To reach those aims we have created a network of trained medical students capable of informing other students about smoking and quitting. In addition, this network of students is trained to intervene in primary and secondary schools in order to inform the students about the dangers of smoking. Moreover, the network was also created in order to provide support to students who want to quit smoking.

Short description :

Since 2008 the Hellenic Medical Students’ International Committee (HelMSIC) has created a peer to peer education network of medical students, who are trained and educated to provide their knowledge to other trainers. The project is based on seminars  and training for medical students who are involved in  interventions in primary and secondary schools. During these seminars students are trained to use interactive lectures, role playing games, open discussions, creation of flyers and cd-roms.
